Attic leak tracing
Damp insulation, dry ceiling
Tarping is what happens when a roof cannot be made permanently watertight the same day — wrong weather, materials that need temperature to bond, or damage too extensive to repair before the next rain. A properly anchored tarp buys weeks. A weighted one blows off in the next storm and takes shingles with it. The difference is whether it is fastened into sound structure above the damage and run far enough up the slope that water cannot get behind it.
Indian Lake is close enough to the Gulf to take the full force of tropical systems, and that is the storm profile that sets everything else. Hurricane wind is sustained for hours rather than gusting, which does something different to a roof — it works shingle tabs loose over an extended period and drives rain horizontally under courses that would shed any normal downpour. Then the heat and humidity do the slow damage. Roofs across Cameron County run hot for most of the year, which ages the shingle and hardens every rubber and sealant component on it, and the humidity means that anything which gets wet inside the roof structure stays wet. A small leak here does considerably more damage over the same period than the same leak would further north, and mould becomes a problem much sooner.
Indian Lake has a population of about 892, and the housing stock here sets the pattern for what fails first on a roof.
A properly anchored one holds for weeks to a few months depending on exposure and UV. It is a bridge to the repair, not a solution — the material degrades and the fixings work loose.
Correctly installed, no. Badly installed, yes — weighted tarps shift and abrade shingles, and fixings driven into the field of the roof create the exact holes you are trying to cover. Anchoring goes into sound structure above the damaged area.
